Your glass shower door is an excellent addition to your home as it brings some much-needed elegance to the bathroom. However, each day, the glass is exposed to grime, moisture, and mineral deposits that build up over time. Thankfully, you can use simple do-it-yourself cleaning solutions to help you restore a streaky, stained, or foggy glass shower door to a sparkly one. Read below for the details.
Cleaning Schedule for Your Glass Shower Door
Ideally, you should carry out some regular, light maintenance so that you only have to deep clean once every few weeks. You can squeegee your shower door daily after you take a shower and wipe it down with a foam cleaning pad or sponge weekly.
Then, you can deep clean once a month. For your deep clean, ensure you scrub the entire shower thoroughly. Go through every nook and cranny and use a water-repellent spray on the glass shower door to prevent hard water stains on the glass.
How to Clean Glass Shower Doors
This guide will teach you how to clean your glass door with vinegar, lemon, and household ammonia.
Vinegar
Vinegar is ideal for cleaning your glass bathroom door as it contains acetic acid that cuts through soap scum. Ideally, you should avoid this solution if your bathroom has unsealed natural stone, as vinegar can damage it. Below is a step-by-step process.
Mix the Cleaning Solution
If you want to do your cleaning daily or weekly, mix distilled white vinegar and distilled water in a ratio of 1:1. You can then add a small amount of dishwashing liquid to the solution to help it stick to the glass.
Spray Your Glass
Spray your glass from the top of the door or wall. Let it stand for at least five minutes to break down the scum if you do weekly cleans. However, you may not need to wait if the bathroom door is wet right after your shower.
Wipe the Solution
Use a non-abrasive sponge to wipe the solution starting from the top. Alternatively, you can squeegee the glass down.
Rinse and Dry
If you used a sponge for the previous step, rinse the glass with water and dry the glass with a lint-free towel.
Lemon Juice
Lemons contain citric acid. Citric acid is less potent compared to acetic acid in vinegar. So, it is best used for daily cleaning instead of weekly cleaning. Like vinegar, you should avoid using this solution in natural stone settings.
The first step would be to mix equal parts of distilled water and lemon juice. Add dishwashing liquid to the spray bottle.
Spray the glass from the top with the distilled water-lemon-juice-dishwasher liquid solution and give it about five minutes to deal with the scum on the surface.
You might not need to rinse the glass if you had used a squeegee to wipe the glass down. However, if you used a sponge, you can use a microfiber towel to remove any streaks and smudges and wipe the glass dry.
Household Ammonia
If you have not been cleaning regularly, you may need more than just cleaning with vinegar and lemon. You can start by cleaning with lemon, follow through with vinegar and top it up with a more potent cleaning product such as household ammonia.
Ammonia is a common ingredient in many shower cleaning ingredients. You will notice that it has a strong odor. Therefore, you should avoid combining it with other cleaning products. Open your windows before you start the cleaning process.
Mix one quart of distilled water with a tablespoon of household ammonia. Spray the stubborn water stains with the solution and wait for it for five minutes. Scrub the door down with a non-abrasive sponge, rinse, and dry.
